20 things you can do as a passenger to help the environment while traveling with Explorer Ventures:
Help reduce waste:
- Avoid buying and bringing items with excess packaging because the island landfill facilities are less equipped to deal with trash than many others.
- Avoid disposable products when possible
- Recycling facilities are scarce in the Caribbean – please take anything that can be recycled (plastics, batteries) in your hometown back with you.
- Buy recycled products to keep things out of the landfill and to save energy and raw materials.
- If you have things that you don’t want to take back with you but that someone else might use – like a book that you finished or a partially full bottle of sunscreen, leave it on the boat for future passengers.
Help reduce water and the negative effects of non-renewable energy
- Turn off the lights when you leave a room and turn off and unplug electronic devices when you do not need them.
- Turn off the water when you brush your teeth or shave.
- Make your trip carbon neutral by offsetting the emissions from your flight with NativeEnergy or another carbon offset provider.
- Carpool or use mass transit to get to the airport.
- Use rechargeable batteries or take your used batteries home with you and recycle them.
Help preserve the marine environment
- Make sure you practice good diving techniques – maintain neutral buoyancy and don’t touch the reefs or chase marine animals.
- Report any bad fishing or destructive fishing/boating/diving practices.
- Avoid eating unsustainably caught seafood (for more information visit the Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch program at http://www.mbayaq.org/cr/seafoodwatch.asp).
- Don’t buy products made from threatened or endangered species.
- Avoid buying shells in perfect condition to discourage the collection of live shells. Shells are an important part of the coastal ecosystem because they are often used by multiple critters and eventually contribute sand to the beaches.
Help by learning more and teaching others
- Learn about the local culture and environment, as well as about resources available in your community.
- Support local conservation efforts.
- Find out more about what you can do to make small changes that add up to a big difference.
- Teach others about the environment and encourage them to conserve & recycle.
Please share with us any ideas you have on how Explorer can better help the environment.
